I was the guy that drifted through life. I rolled with the punches, even when they knocked me on my ass.

I'd get back up, dust myself off, and pretend life wasn't full of heartache and disappointment.

On the outside, I was nothing more than the fun-loving guy that made everyone laugh.

But on the inside, there was more hate than I knew how to control.

No one knew the life I'd led; I hid my demons well.

But even in all the anger and pain, there was one spark of sweetness.

She was younger than me, so innocent, and worst of all, my best friend's little sister.

Grace was off limits.

Wanting her led to the possibility of losing the only true family I'd had left. I wouldn't want her; I had to keep a safe distance. But seeing her change from the sweet girl into a woman with desires did something to me. It shifted something inside me, and that something was impossible to control.

But had I realized that Grace Jackson was the one for me too late? Had I missed my chance by driving her away and into the arms of another?

“I love you Grace,” he whispers making my heart beat faster. “This is going to be the longest nine months of my life.”

“I’ll see you before I graduate.” There would be nothing that would stop me.

“I know, but I want you back here with me. I want you waking me up in the middle of the night with your snoring.”

I laugh and tug on the ends of his hair. “I don’t snore.”

“Baby, you do, but it’s the sweetest sound I’ve ever heard.” He leans back and kisses me, yet still holds my body close to his. “I don’t want to let you go.”

“You’re not letting me go,” I correct, with an arched brow.

When his eyes fill with tears, there is no way to stop my own from falling. “Then why does it feel like I am?”

This time I grip his face in my hands and trace my thumbs over the contour of his jaw on both sides. “I love you too,” I tell him, and he closes his eyes as if letting my words sink in. “And I’m coming back to you. I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever for this moment right here and there is no way I’m letting it go.”

“Promise,” his words are nothing more than a whisper.

“I promise.” He takes in a slow deep breath. “Besides you said you’d buy me a horse.”

“I’ll buy you ten.” He didn’t even hesitate for a second.

“One is good,” I assure him. “Or maybe two so we can ride together.”

“You got it baby,” He hugs me to him once more, kissing the top of my head. “Maybe I’ll get a third one for Julian.” Right then I fall in love with him all over again. He’d accepted Julian as part of my life and that meant the world to me. “We can teach him to ride.”

“That should be entertaining.” He chuckles and rocks me from side to side, breathing me in. With my face buried to his neck I do the same.

I knew I had to go, but I didn’t want to leave. My heart felt like it was breaking, and I knew the second I climbed into my Jeep I was going to lose it.

“I miss you already,” I confess as a tear runs along my cheek and soaks into his shirt.

“Me too, baby,” pulling back he dips his chin and kisses the corner of my mouth. “One call, anytime and I’m heading your way, that’s all it’ll take.”

“You shouldn’t say that,” I smile. “I’ll be calling you every week and that could get expensive.”

“I don’t care.” The way he is looking at me, with such an intense look in his eyes, I didn’t doubt him. “Not having you here is gonna kill me but as long as you promise to come back to me, I’ll have something to hold onto.”

“There isn’t anyone or anything that will keep me away.”

“Good, because if you tried to run I’d find you.” For the first time his smile is genuine, and that dimple peeks out. “You’re my girl Grace,” he states. “Should have been that way long ago, but there’s no going back. There’s only going forward and you’re the only woman I see my future with.”

He leads me to the passenger side of the Jeep and helps me up inside. Once my seatbelt is buckled he gives me one last kiss and looks over at Julian who sits behind the wheel. “Take care of our girl,” he says, and I close my eyes fighting the tears. “She means the world to me, and I can’t be there so I’m trusting you to do what I can’t.”

“You got it,” Julian says and then Terrance rubs my thigh and brushes his lips over the corner of my mouth.

“Love you, Gracie,” and with that he closes the door and I look away. I had to, because had I not, I knew I’d never leave.
